How Does an Onboard Hydrogen Supply System Work?

The onboard hydrogen supply system stores compressed hydrogen inside high-pressure composite cylinders and delivers hydrogen to the fuel cell stack through a pressure regulation system.

The complete system mainly consists of:

  • Hydrogen Storage Cylinders

Store compressed hydrogen at 35MPa or 70MPa.

  • Main Shut-off Valve

Controls hydrogen flow and emergency shutoff.

  • Pressure Regulator

Reduces hydrogen pressure before entering the fuel cell.

  • Safety Protection System

Includes temperature sensors, pressure relief devices, and leak monitoring.

  • Fuel Cell System

Converts hydrogen into electricity to power the vehicle.

Hydrogen Flow:

Hydrogen Filling → Storage Cylinders→ Pressure Regulation → Fuel Cell Stack → Electric Motor → Vehicle Power

Type III vs Type IV Hydrogen Storage Systems

Feature Type III Type IV
Liner Material Aluminum Polymer
Weight Light Ultra Light
Working Pressure 35MPa / 70MPa 70MPa
Hydrogen Density High Very High
Durability Excellent Excellent

FAQ
What is an onboard hydrogen supply system?

An onboard hydrogen supply system stores compressed hydrogen and supplies it safely to fuel cell vehicles, including trucks, buses, and logistics vehicles.

What is the difference between Type III and Type IV hydrogen cylinders?

Type III cylinders use an aluminum liner wrapped with carbon fiber, while Type IV cylinders use a polymer liner, making them lighter but generally more expensive.

Is 35MPa or 70MPa better?

35MPa systems are widely used for heavy-duty trucks and buses, while 70MPa systems offer higher hydrogen density and are more suitable for passenger vehicles.

How long does a hydrogen storage cylinder last?

Most onboard hydrogen storage cylinders are designed for more than 15 years of service life and thousands of filling cycles.

Are hydrogen storage systems safe?

Yes. Modern systems are equipped with pressure relief devices, leak detection systems, and multiple safety protections.

Can Rein Hytec provide customized onboard hydrogen systems?

Yes. Rein Hytec provides customized hydrogen storage and fuel supply systems according to vehicle types and customer requirements.
