How Does an Onboard Hydrogen Supply System Work?
The onboard hydrogen supply system stores compressed hydrogen inside high-pressure composite cylinders and delivers hydrogen to the fuel cell stack through a pressure regulation system.
The complete system mainly consists of:
-
Hydrogen Storage Cylinders
Store compressed hydrogen at 35MPa or 70MPa.
-
Main Shut-off Valve
Controls hydrogen flow and emergency shutoff.
-
Pressure Regulator
Reduces hydrogen pressure before entering the fuel cell.
-
Safety Protection System
Includes temperature sensors, pressure relief devices, and leak monitoring.
-
Fuel Cell System
Converts hydrogen into electricity to power the vehicle.
Hydrogen Flow:
Hydrogen Filling → Storage Cylinders→ Pressure Regulation → Fuel Cell Stack → Electric Motor → Vehicle Power

An onboard hydrogen supply system stores compressed hydrogen and supplies it safely to fuel cell vehicles, including trucks, buses, and logistics vehicles.
Type III cylinders use an aluminum liner wrapped with carbon fiber, while Type IV cylinders use a polymer liner, making them lighter but generally more expensive.
35MPa systems are widely used for heavy-duty trucks and buses, while 70MPa systems offer higher hydrogen density and are more suitable for passenger vehicles.
Most onboard hydrogen storage cylinders are designed for more than 15 years of service life and thousands of filling cycles.
