Rein Drives Breakthrough in 52MPa High-Pressure Hydrogen Storage Technology

The national key research and development program project—"High-Pressure, Large-Capacity Tube Trailer Hydrogen Storage Technology for Road

Transport"—has successfully passed comprehensive performance evaluation and acceptance. This project was led by Hefei General Machinery Research Institute Co., Ltd., with participation from Zhejiang Rein, Zhejiang University, and multiple other institutions and enterprises.

As one of the core participating units, Zhejiang Rein focused on three key research tasks: reliability design technology for large-capacity plastic liners, controlled forming and welding processes, and carbon fiber winding design/manufacturing methods for high-aspect-ratio hydrogen storage cylinders, as well as the development of high-pressure large-capacity hydrogen storage tube trailers for road transport.

The project successfully developed a 52MPa large-capacity, high-hydrogen-density Type IV hydrogen storage cylinder and tube trailer with a total geometric volume of 32.04m³ and hydrogen filling capacity of 1,045kg. The entire system weighs approximately 26 tons. This breakthrough effectively resolves the limitations of China’s existing 20MPa Type I (all-metal) and 30MPa Type II (metal-lined hoop-wrapped) cylinders—such as low hydrogen storage capacity, low storage density, and high transportation costs—providing critical technical support for the development of hydrogen energy and fuel cell vehicle industries.

Launched in November 2020, the project underwent four years of technological攻坚 before passing acceptance at the end of May 2025. Moving forward, Zhejiang Rein will continue advancing hydrogen storage and transportation efficiency while reducing costs, contributing to the high-quality development of China’s hydrogen energy sector.

Rein Supports Hydrogen Fuel Verification for Aviation Power Systems

Recently, the 100-kN class hydrogen fuel turbojet engine independently developed by the hydrogen energy team of China Aero Engine Research Institute (AERI) completed China’s first hydrogen fuel aviation turbine power flight verification in Inner Mongolia.

This test flight utilized Xiamen University’s GF-2000 flight test platform, reaching a maximum altitude of 3,000 meters. It successfully validated the stability and reliability of the hydrogen turbine engine under flight conditions. As key supporting partners, Zhejiang Rein and Zhuzhou National Innovation Center jointly provided critical support. Rein supplied the airborne 70MPa Type IV cylinder hydrogen storage system and a 90MPa compressor for ground refueling services. Facing dual challenges of stringent technical requirements and tight deadlines, Rein’s team ensured project advancement through robust technical capabilities and efficient collaboration, earning high recognition.

The successful test flight fills a technological gap in China’s hydrogen aviation propulsion sector, marking a milestone in advancing green aviation and implementing the national "dual-carbon" strategy. Zhejiang Rein will continue deepening R&D in high-pressure hydrogen storage technology to deliver more advanced technical solutions for diversified hydrogen applications.
